Shining A Light On Mental Health

Recently a new light has been shone on mental health, proving that it is truly an affliction that humanity is finally embracing with supportive hands and an open heart. Athletes, celebrities, and our peers are embarking on this stigma associated journey and attempting to bare it all by releasing this skeleton in the closet and ask for help.
Just like any other illness, mental health is a disease that needs to be researched and treated accordingly. In the past mental health has carried an unspoken shame, despite its ability to be nonbias in its sufferers. Although the exact cause of most mental illnesses is not known, it is becoming clear through research that many of these conditions are caused by a combination of genetic, biological, psychological, and environmental factors — not personal weakness or a character defect — and recovery from a mental illness is not simply a matter of will and self-discipline. Humanity Impact believes that being transparent about your personal battles, and taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body.
Many celebrities have felt immense pressure and anxiety as a result of being in a constant spotlight, and have utilized their platform to bring attention and awareness to mental illness. It’s even affected the Royal Family. Heads Together is an organization started by The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge, along with Prince Harry. After years of dealing with the loss of their mother privately, attempting to manage their grief, yet outwardly appearing to be “out-of-control”, the family decided to speak about their experience with the illness and help others find relief and learn how to live a happy life.
In conjunction with this movement, Lady Gaga spoke with Prince William about her own struggles and how she learned the importance of taking one day at a time. The program has taken on the movement #oktosay which has continued to encourage others to be open and have a healthy judgment-free conversation about mental health. The reality is, despite what the majority believes, an open conversation is the first step and can go a long way in helping someone overcome the unnecessary shame associated with mental illness.
While mental health affects us all, this illness has shown prominence recently in schools as well as historically within the military (primarily with veterans re-adjusting back to their normal lives from duty). Unfortunately, many despairing stories have come from mental illness, but they have prompted us all to take this disease seriously.
This new information provokes some of us to beg the question, ‘How much does mental health play into the school shootings that have occurred across America?’ The shooters in several of these situations suffered anxiety, depression, restlessness, abuse and experienced bullying, among many other conditions. Hypertension has been referred to as the silent killer, but here at Humanity Impact, we believe that mental illness is the genuine silent killer. We have lost so many beautiful souls to this broad illness and its time for humanity as a whole to get involved and take action to help mediate and discover a healthy resolution.
Mental illness awareness is great, spreading the word, is amazing, but actually doing something about it is what will really bring the change we need to see! If you are struggling, talk to someone, if you experience anxiety, reach out for help, if you notice that a loved one is having difficulties, simply open up the conversation and extend a listening ear. Strive to be accepting and approachable and take the time to educate yourself. So put yourself out there to help and be helped. It will make this world a much better place.
